Senate splits Office of the Accountant General of the Federation
The Nigeria Senate has split the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) into two.
Senators have during the votes on bills to amend the 1999 Constitution on Tuesday voted to split the office in order to ease administration with the newly created “Accountant General of the Federal Government”, now dedicated to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation will distinctly deal with the three tiers of government.
When the vote was cast, 88 Senators voted in favour of splitting the office and the number would be sustained when it is subjected to third reading on Wednesday in accordance with legislative procedure peculiar to Constitution amendment.
The bill read: “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fifth Alteration) bill. No. 51, 2022 (Establishment of the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federal Government – Section 84(5)(A).
“A bill seeks to establish the Office of the Accountant General of the Federal Government distinct from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
“The proposed alteration is aimed at ensuring the ease of administration by enabling the Federal government to have its own accounting officer separate from the accounting officer that deals with the other tiers of government.”
