Niger NBA Chairman decries acute water shortage in Minna, calls for intervention

The Chairman Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Niger State branch, Barrister Mohammed Abdulkadir Waziri has raised the alarm over the perennial water scarcity in Minna and its environs calling on Niger State governor, Mohammed Umar Bago to address the trend.

Speaking shortly after the monthly Congress of the branch at the High court complex, the chairman described the acute shortage of water in Minna as worrisome.

He noted with dismay the number of households that go out on daily basis in search of water in far distance describing the situation as unacceptable.

According to him, some houses trekked in far distance even at night in search of water, a situation he described as painful stressing the need for the governor to as a matter of urgency address the ugly trend.

While applauding governor Umar Mohammed Bago for aggressive road projects in Minna and other major towns, the chairman noted that the road projects will further boost social economic development in the state.

Speaking on the increasing rates of essential commodity, particularly food stuff, Barrister Abdulkadir Waziri requested for the establishment of Consumer Protection Commission in the state, noting that it will checkmate the hike in food in “our market and reduce the activities of middlemen in our local markets”.

Speaking further, the NBA Chairman observed that the hike in food stuff in the market has created a devastating effect on commoners, urging the relevant authority to wade in to reduce the hardship being faced by the less privileged citizens in the state.

On the removal of fuel and power supply Abdulkadir Waziri insisted that the removal of the subsidies have created untold hardship on Nigerians calling on the governor to call the management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to order and address epileptic power supply in Minna and its environs.

This he noted will improve the socio economic and commercial activities in the state capital.

Meanwhile a 5-member electoral committee to conduct election into various offices of the branch has been constituted by the NBA Minna Branch.

Fielding questions from Journalists, the chairman of the 5-member of the committee Barrister Mohammed Abubakar El-Surur stated that the committee will soon outline the program and modalities of the election into the various offices to be contested for.

At the end of the monthly Congress of the branch, a common room and convenience apartment donated to the branch by the Chief Judge of Niger State, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik was commissioned.
