The Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called for the release of two Nigerians wrongfully detained in Togo.

The information was posted on X by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun on Thursday.

“Update on this: Chairman/CEO of @nidcom_gov Hon Abike Dabir Erewa has directed the Head of its Legal Unit to get on this matter,” Olusegun wrote.

“The Nigerian mission in Togo has also been activated to ensure that this is resolved immediately. More updates before the end of today.”

Two citizens of Nigeria are said to have been locked up in a Togolese prison after airport authorities in the West African country arrested them on November 8, 2023.

Both were reportedly on their way to Canada through Togo, having discovered that they could get cheaper flights from the West African nation instead of Lagos or Abuja.

NIDCOM became aware of the situation after one of them managed to squeeze out a message to Canada-based academic, Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi.

Igbalajobi in a post on X told the government official that two Nigerians had been sentenced to six months in prison by the Togolese authorities.
