The National Youth Leaders fotim has called for allocation of 20% of the budget to youth development initiatives.

They said, this has become necessary to show government’s unwavering commitment to empowering and nurturing the youth but also ensure their active participation in shaping the nation’s progress.

Chairman of the group which is an umbrella body of all Political Parties in Nigeria, Ambassador Muhammad Auwal Musa, speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, expressed that youths development was not captured as a priority in the budget that was passed by the National Assembly.

The NYLFPPN expressed their appreciation for President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s proactive approach as reflected in the proposed budget, which is themed “Renewed Hope”, but said, there was provision for youths development in the sectoral allocation.

Ambassador Musa argued that it would stop emigration of talented youths to other countries and lessen brain drain, if government prioritises youths and develop them.

“He said: Drawing attention to the importance of allocating a significant portion of the budget to youth development, we want to emphasize the need to prevent the emigration of talented young individuals from the country.

“There is the urgent need for investment in Nigerian youth, recognizing their pivotal role in shaping the country’s future”, he said.

This, he noted, include quality education, skills training, and employment opportunities.

Ambassador Muhammad Auwal Musa commended President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for his proactive approach to governance and acknowledged the efforts made in the 2024 budget. However, he called for a comprehensive review of the budget to allocate a significant portion towards youth development. The forum firmly believes that such a move would create an environment where young Nigerian talent can thrive, fostering a renewed sense of hope and prosperity for the nation.

The NYLFPPN remains committed to advocating for the interests and aspirations of Nigerian youth, and they look forward to constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders to drive positive change in the country.

CAPITAL POST recalled that the budget was passed into law by legislators of the upper and lower Chambers on Saturday before they embarked on new year break.
