Nigeria’s Minister of Environment,
Alhaji Balarabe Abbas Lawal has revealed that insecurity was the biggest challenge facing the green wall efforts.

He said because of insecurity people are not allowed to go and plant trees, saying sometime the trees are cut indiscriminately.

The minister made this known at the joint session of the National Assembly committee on Environment held recently in Abuja.

He said “Because they don’t allow people to go and plant the trees that we are supposed to plant. And sometimes they cut the trees indiscriminately.

“And like I indicated, one of the biggest issues we are facing is that our great Green Wall efforts are being hampered by insecurity”.

According to the minister there is strong need for the government to enforce the law that are taking care of the forest.

“We are thinking of coming up with a unit that we can, out of our park ranges, that will now address the issue of people of bad habits.

“That is why I feel that we are going to work very closely with the Minister of Defence to see what we can do to make sure our forests are well guarded”.
