Security challenges in Africa can be solved through people-centric development – Ambassador Alban

Ambassador Dr. Aniekanabasi Alban, recently appointed Head of Security and Peace, Social Justice, and Governance at the International Society of Diplomats, highlighted the urgent need for prioritizing people’s development as a solution to the array of security issues prevailing across Africa.

Following his appointment in Abuja, Ambassador Alban engaged journalists, emphasizing the critical role of narrowing socio-economic disparities in mitigating prevalent security challenges. He underlined that bridging the gap between different strata of society significantly contributes to addressing root causes of insecurity.

Ambassador Alban highlighted the impact of societal marginalization on driving individuals toward engaging in criminal activities, stating, “Empowering people on both individual and collective levels plays a pivotal role in reshaping societal dynamics, fostering a more peaceful environment.”

Linking peace to comprehensive development, Ambassador Alban stressed the importance of closing the divide between government institutions and citizens, as well as advocating for more inclusivity of marginalized groups within society.

Expressing gratitude for the entrusted responsibility, Ambassador Alban voiced his commitment to steering initiatives focused on security, governance, and social justice in Africa. He underscored the significance of diplomacy, security measures, transparent governance systems, and the promotion of social justice in addressing the continent’s diverse challenges and opportunities.

While acknowledging the multifaceted nature of security concerns, he highlighted the need for holistic approaches that encompass not only safeguarding physical borders but also prioritizing the welfare of communities. Emphasizing the necessity of accountable governance systems, Ambassador Alban stressed the importance of equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances.


In advocating for collaborative efforts, Ambassador Alban expressed readiness to collaborate with fellow members of the International Society for Diplomats, governmental bodies, and civil society organizations across Africa.

Concluding his address, Ambassador Alban urged concerted efforts towards forging a path to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous future for the African continent and Nigeria.
