Ahead of Saturday’s governorship and State House of Assembly elections, Kanuri and Shuwa Arabs living in Kaduna on Wednesday endorsed the candidature of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Isah Ashiru Kudan.
The ethnic group operating under the aegis of Kanuri-Shuwa Women and Youth Forum in Kaduna (KASHUWAK) who are about 1.5 million in population threw their weight behind PDP’s candidate after a meeting where Isah Ashiru was adopted as the preferred candidate.
In a statement which was issued by the joint Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Gana and Secretary, Ngari Abubakar Aliyu
Secretary and Women Coordinator, Hajiya Asmau Zanna and made available to CAPITAL POST, the Forum explained that their decision to endorse Ashiru was premised on Senator Shehu Sani’s advice that they should all vote for the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship and Assembly flag-bearers in Kaduna State.
The statement added that the ethnic groups were of the belief that Ashiru has capacity to foster unity in Kaduna, including accommodating the groups for the Commissionership slot if voted into office.
In account of the ethnic groups, the Forum said, Kanuri and Shuwa have been in Kaduna State long before the Hausas and they are part of the ruling dynasty of the Zaria Emirate.
They decried the marginalisation of the tribe in Kaduna by the previous administrations despite their peaceful and modest contribution to the socio-economic and political wellbeing of the State and urged Senator Shehu Sani to ensure their inclusion in governance in the next administration.
They called on electorate to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday.
The statement notes: “We are Kanuri and Shuwa Arabs ethnic nationality in Kaduna who are willing to exercise our franchise in the governoship and House of Assembly elections on Saturday.
“That the tribe which is about 1.5 million people with Senator Shehu Sani and Isah Ashiru as our bonafide sons, we hereby endorse Ashiru’s candidature to be voted into office on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, CAPITAL POST earlier reported that the Peoples Democratic Party garnered 70% of votes cast in the presidential and Parliamentary elections on February 25, 2023.
