Senate adopts motion for completion of Junior Girls Model Secondary School Odu – Okpiyegede in Dekina

The Nigerian Senate has adopted a motion for completion of abandoned Junior Girls Models Secondary School in in Dekina Local Government Council of Kogi East Senatorial district.

The adoption followed a motion sponsored by Senator Isah Jibrin representing Kogi East Senatorial district, who argued that the completion of the School would be in the best interest of girl-children in Nigeria.

In the general principles of the motion which was debated on Wednesday,
Senator Jibrin recalled that in view of the significance of girls – child education, federal government in September 2014 initiated Junior Girls Model Secondary School Odu – Okpiyegede to fill the needs, but the project was unfortunately abandoned.

Lamenting the situation, he.said: “Despite the efforts of the federal government as indicated above, no attempt has been made since 2016 to ensure commencement of academic activities.

According to the Senator, “the idea of the federal government is to encourage girls child education and reduce girls child off the street, and to succeed these there is a need to complete the school and put it to use.

The Senate further stated that “completion of the school project and take – off academic activities will boost the chances of the girls child in accessing education in Dekina Local Government of Kogi state and Nigeria at large”.

Briefing journalists in his office, Senator Jibrin expressed his joy over the massive support of his colleagues for the motion to go for public hearing in the shortest time to come.

“My motivation is to see girls child education on the increase, in my place a lot of girls are yearning to go to school, and more so, the abandoned project of the federal government should be revamped”, he said.

The Distinguish Senator also commended the Senate over their resolution that Senate urged the federal government of Nigeria to complete the school project and hand it over to the State government for its use.

The Senate further urged the Senate Committee on basic and secondary education to work with committee of appropriation to make adequate provisions for the completion of the school in 2023 budget proposal.
