What is Worship?

In the last two weeks, we studied “tithing’, and its blessing to mankind. Today we will be looking at worship; its meaning and whether to worship the “Creator’, or “Creature”.

Worship defined

According to Merriam Webster, worship is “to honor or show reverence for as a divine being or supernatural power”.

Worship is to adore, deify, venerate, reverence a supernatural deity (God).

Man is a religious being; and always crave for fellowship with God. From the beginning, God had a spiritual connection with man and come to fellowship with him in the garden of Eden. The religious nature in man is evident especially in the act of worshipping the creature instead of the creator.

Man see the power of the sun and worships it; the powerful sound of the thunder and the striking lightening; he worships it.

Some build up images and carve statues, worshipping them as God.

But thank God for the revelation in His word (The Bible), we know better who to fellowship with and worship.

“You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself any idol, or any likeness (form, manifestation) of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth [as an object to worship]. You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous (impassioned) God [demanding what is rightfully and uniquely mine], visiting (avenging) the iniquity (sin, guilt) of the fathers on the children [that is, calling the children to account for the sins of their fathers], to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Exodus 20:3‭-‬5 AMP

*Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come before him: Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.*
1 Chronicles 16:29 KJV

Worship is a beautiful thing that transforms the worshipper into a realm where he enjoys communion with God.

Worship goes beyond singing, shouting and dancing in his presence. It’s a spiritual connection that brings the presence of God to dwell with us.

Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. Romans 12:1 AMP.

Jesus in his discourse with the Samaritan woman made it clearer as he said ,”…but a time is coming and is already here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit [from the heart, the inner self] and in truth; for the Father seeks such people to be His worshipers. God is spirit [the Source of life, yet invisible to mankind], and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23‭-‬24 AMP

True worship connects to a realm where we gain access to the throne of grace and all things are possible as we worship in his presence.
