Sirigu out of Italy squad, returns to Genoa
Italy goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu won’t travel to Northern Ireland for Monday’s crucial match, as he will return to Genoa today.
The Azzurri announced big changes to the squad ahead of the decisive match in Group C, as Alessandro Bastoni pulled out with an injury.
Milan full-back Davide Calabria then followed the Inter defender back to the fashion capital, while Cristiano Biraghi left the squad due to personal reasons.
Atalanta full-back Davide Zappacosta and Sassuolo centre-back Gian Marco Ferrari were called up for the game in Belfast, and now Sirigu has pulled out of Mancini’s squad.
Italy are already without Lorenzo Pellegrini, Nicolò Zaniolo and Giorgio Chiellini for the games this month and arrive after a 1-1 draw with Switzerland on Friday.
The Azzurri sit first in Group C on goal difference when the Swiss host Bulgaria in the last match of the World Cup Qualifiers.
