Harmony Corps celebrates 7th year anniversary, appeals for presidential assent to bill

Harmony Corps of Nigeria, (HCN), a non-governmental organisation on Wednesday celebrated its 7th year anniversary with an appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to its bill which was passed into law by the National Assembly.

Founder of the organisation, Amb. Mrs Elizabeth Omini explained that, there were challenges faced by the organisation in the last seven years, saying that its name has to change from “Global Initiative for Harmony in Nigeria (GIHN) to Harmony Corps of Nigeria (HCN) in line with the vision.

In her welcome address, the founder noted that unity of the nation underlies the vision of Harmony Corps, hence, signing the bill would deepen its activities.

According to her, Harmony Corps has come as an instrument of solidifying the unity of Nigeria and correcting the social vices among the youths.

“HCN has come as an instrument of solidifying the unity and correcting social vices and enhancing the peaceful/corporate existence of citizens of this country in the hands of government such as transforming our society into an indivisible nation where harmony and brotherhood reigns.”

In years ahead, she noted, the Corps would install national and global peace through education and orientation.

Amb. Omini lamented the national challenges confronting the nation, adding that the Corps would work in partnership with the National Orientation Agency and other agencies of government to proffer solutions.

She pointed out the moral decadence among Nigeria youths which was attributed to the lack of jobs saying measures must be put in place to tackle youth unemployment.

“The creation of several avenues where youths can be engaged meaningfully thereby reducing the rate of crime by eradicating anti-social behaviour and other vices like cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractices in our society.”

Answering questions from reporters after the opening ceremony, Omini said, the target of the Corps was to provide jobs for Nigeria’s teeming youths.

Meanwhile, the Commandant of FCT Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Akinbinu David expressed the willingness of the Command to work in partnership with Harmony Corps of Nigeria.

Representatives from the Nigeria Airforce, Civil Society Organisations within and in Diaspora were present at the ocassion as well as the former first lady and wife of the former governor of Kogi State, Prof. Aisha Audu.
