A former member of the House of Representatives, representing Ika federal constituency of Delta State, Cairo Ojougboh on Wednesday died in his Abuja office while watching AFCON 2023 semi-final game between Nigeria and South Africa.
Reports said the 64-year-old former Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), died after a penalty was awarded to South Africa.
Nigeria went on to win the game 4-2 on penalties after regulation time ended 1-1.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, described the death of the All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain as a tragic loss.
The statement reads in part, “It is with a heavy heart that President Bola Tinubu receives the news of the passing of Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, former Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), who died on Wednesday.
“Dr. Ojougboh was a member of the House of Representatives (2003-2007) and a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State.
“President Tinubu condoles with the Ojougboh family and the government and people of Delta State over this tragic loss.
“While praying for the peaceful repose of the departed, President Tinubu comforts his family and urges them to find strength and hope in God Almighty, who presides over the affairs of men, as well as in the cherished memories and legacy of the late APC chieftain.”
Also, former Vice President and flagbearer for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at the 2023 presidential elections, Atiku Abubakar, mourned Ojougboh.
“The sudden passing of my close friend, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, deeply saddens me. His love for our country was profound,” Abubakar said.
Atiku described Cairo as a shining example of patriotism; his dedication to Nigeria was unwavering, and his departure is a personal loss that leaves a void in his heart.
“As we mourn, let us remember the passion and zeal for Nigeria that defined his life. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Atiku said.
