Southern Senators Forum inaugurated

Senators from the Southern part of Nigeria under the aegis of Southern Senators Forum on Wednesday inaugurated at the National Assembly, Abuja.

The forum which has Bamidele Opeyemi representing Ekiti Central Senatorial district emerged as Chairman.

Addressing journalists after the inaugural meeting, Opeyemi revealed that the forum has made commitment to ensure indivisibility of the country. com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"> js">

He acknowledged that there were daunting challenges confronting the country, but would manage it.

The lawmaker said: “Our position is that we have to manage our unity in diversity. We further look forward to strengthen the leadership of the Senate.

“We would provide voice for our people that we came here to represent. We would use the platform to strengthen the unity of Nigeria that we have all promised to uphold.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege said, the forum has been in the works for two years now, but became appropriate to be inaugurated given its strategic importance to the South.

He said, the Forum would work with the Northern Senators Forum to ensure unity of the country.

“We have the northern senators forum which was inaugurated some time ago. By June 11, we would be in Senate for two years and we felt we need to inaugurate the leadership for southern senators forum.

“Let me make it very clear that we are united, both the northern and southern senators. We are United behind the leadership of the 9th Senate.

“We have resolved that notwithstanding the challenges facing the country, we would support a united Nigeria.”

Those who were inaugurated executives of the forum are: Senators Stella Adaeze Oduah (Vice Chairman); Mathew Urhogide (Secretary General); Olamilekan Adeola (Treasurer); Chukwuka Utazi (Publicity Secretary); and Biobarakuma Degi (Financial Secretary).
