BREAKING: Delta Governor, Oborevwori defects to APC
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori

IAhead of 2027 political realignment, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on Thursday, defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

His defection marks another major boost for the ruling All Progressives Congress and APC is struggling to have inroad into the South South and South East to retain its dominance in governance in Nigeria.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon disclosed that Oborevwori’s defection followed a high level political meeting on Wednesday at the Government House, Asaba.

He said: “Governor Oborevwori’s decision came after extensive consultations with political stakeholders across the state and the nation”, emphasizing that the move was in the interest of “Delta’s long-term development and a desire to align the state more strategically with the federal government.”

Governor Oborevwori, who was elected under the PDP platform in 2023, is known for his populist leadership style and grassroots connection, particularly through his widely publicized M.O.R.E Agenda — focused on Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security.

Political analysts view his defection as a significant boost to the APC in the South-South region, where the PDP has traditionally held sway. Sources close to the governor suggest that talks had been ongoing for months, with senior APC figures lobbying for his switch in what they describe as a “crucial political win.”

Meanwhile, reactions from the PDP have been swift and critical. A senior party official, who asked not to be named, described the governor’s exit as “unfortunate and a betrayal of party loyalty.”

As the news spreads, attention now shifts to how this defection will influence Delta State’s political dynamics ahead of the next electoral cycle. It also raises questions about the fate of PDP lawmakers and local government leaders in the state, many of whom were aligned with Governor Oborevwori.
