NCWS launches 16 days of activism campaign against female genital mutilation

In a significant effort to combat Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, the National Council for Women’s Societies,NCWS, has announced plans for a dedicated awareness campaign during the 16 Days of Activism.

President of NCWS, Hajiya Lami Adamu Lau,said the initiative aims to eradicate dangerous practices, particularly at the grassroots level.

Lau who spoke during the opening of a one-day Workshop held in Abuja,said “The eradication of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) involves building and mobilizing grassroots organizations.

“During our 16 Days of Activism, state representatives gather in Abuja to carry home their responsibilities.

She emphasized that “The National Council for Women’s Societies in Nigeria holds a unique position, with influence extending to all 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, and 774 local governments”

“This opportunity aims to eliminate dangerous practices, especially at the grassroots level. The global campaign focuses on investing against gender-based violence, and our strategy involves human capacity development. We aim to equip Nigerian women with knowledge and skills to support the total abandonment of FGM in our communities.

“Distinguished experts and advocates contribute valuable knowledge and experience, enhancing individual understanding. The goal is to mobilize and train women associations in local communities to advocate for the abandonment of FGM.

“Appreciation is extended to development partners, especially the UNFPA, for their valued partnership and support. Together, we work towards a future where the eradication of FGM becomes a reality, respecting and protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls.

“Although specific states like Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Imo, and Ebonyi are marked for this project, the campaign’s message is universal for the entire nation. Join us in the 16 Days of Activism and be part of this crucial initiative,”she said.

Also speaking, Analyst, Gender/Female Genital Mutilation, FGM UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund, Karima Bungudu We entered into a partnership with the National Council for Women’s Society in Nigeria. We believe this organization is crucial, particularly in addressing public health issues such as gender-based violence, specifically female genital mutilation (FGM). UNFPA, in collaboration with the Nigerian government, is supporting a response and prevention program, making it the largest national initiative on ending FGM in the country.

The program’s activities will be implemented in five states, chosen due to their high prevalence at the local level. Since its launch in 2014, UNFPA has been actively involved in this initiative. We consider NCWS to be a vital partner in addressing grassroots challenges. We aim to come together to build capacity and address these critical issues,”she said.
