The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disclosed the timetable for bye-elections and court-ordered re-run elections across nine states set for February 3rd, 2024.
The elections, stemming from resignations or demises in National and State Houses of Assembly, along with court directives from the 2023 General Election, are slated for this significant date.
These vacancies, declared by the Presiding Officers, span two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies, affecting nine states across the Federation.
Additionally, the Commission is set to conduct re-run elections as directed by various Election Petition Appeal Tribunals, stemming from the 2023 General Election. A total of 35 constituencies are affected by these Court-ordered elections, with three covering entire constituencies and others involving only specific Polling Units.
Both categories of elections are scheduled to take place simultaneously on Saturday, 3rd February 2024, urging political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the specified timelines for seamless conduct.
The detailed Timetable, including delimitation data such as registration areas, polling unit names, the number of registered voters, and PVCs collected, has been uploaded to INEC’s website and social media platforms. This information serves as a guide for political parties and candidates and is available for public awareness.
In a statement by National Commissioner & Chairman of the Information Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun mni, emphasized the importance of adherence to the specified timelines for the successful execution of these elections. The announcement marks a crucial step in ensuring the democratic process is upheld and electoral activities proceed smoothly in the designated constituencies.
The elections, covering a diverse range of constituencies, hold significance in shaping the political landscape in the affected states, and all eyes will be on the outcomes come February 3rd, 2024.
