NBA’s suit seeking reinstatement of sacked pregnant police officer rejected

The Justice Inyang Ekwo led Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday rejected a suit filed by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seeking for reinstatement of sacked female Police officer who got pregnant while being single.

The Police woman was sacked based on laws which stipulates that “any Police woman who got pregnant out of wedlock be sacked.

But the body of lawyers has approached the Federal High Court seeking reversal of the sack of Police woman, arguing that the provision of Nigeria Police Regulations (NPR) conflict with section 37 of the Constitution and discriminate against unmarried female police officers.

Justice Ekwo ruled that the female Police officer was a breast of sections 126 and 127 of the Police Regulations before she enlisted herself into the Force.

“Section 126 provides for maternity leave for a married woman police officer who is pregnant, while Section 127 of the NPR provides for the sack of an unmarried woman police officer who gets pregnant.

On 26 January 2021 one Omolola Olajide, a police officer in Ekiti State was sacked for getting pregnant while being single.
