Chapter seven: The TERRORS of the day of resurrection

2- SOME OF THE FEATURES OF THE HORRORS OF THE RESURRECTION

5) The rolling up of the sun, the eclipse of the moon and the falling of the stars

This moon, which appears at the beginning of the month as a crescent, then it waxes until it becomes a full moon, shining splendidly, of whose beauty has always been enchanted by poets, and it keeps travellers company on their long journeys at night, will be eclipsed and its light will vanish.

فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ (القيامة: 7).
وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ (القيامة: 8).
(So, when the sight shall be dazed, And the moon will be eclipsed.

) (Qur’an 75: 7-8)

These stars which are sprinkled across the blue dome of the sky, will come to an end and they will fall and be scattered:

وَإِذَا الْكَوَاكِبُ انتَثَرَتْ (الإنفطار: 2).
When the stars have fallen and been scattered.) (Qur’an 82: 2)

وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ (التكوير: 2).
(And when the stars shall fall.) (Qur’an 81: 2)

The words translated here as “fallen” and “scattered” come from roots which indicate “being poured out”. [Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 7/221]
