As Israel-Hamas War continues, Iran watches and waits

As well as fighting the war against Hamas, Israel is busy fending off attacks from Hezbollah and the Houthis. Iran, which is behind all the attacks, is hoping to exhaust Israel, says expert.

When Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7 and inflicted what is considered to be the Jewish state’s worst intelligence and military failure in recent years, Iran’s leadership celebrated the opening act of a wider regional conflict.

As Israel’s archenemy, Iran has repeatedly called for the destruction of the Jewish state throughout the past decades and has helped fund and train Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Iran has also funded other terrorist organizations that continuously threaten Israel, some of which have entered the current round of violence, potentially plunging the region into a much larger war.

“Iran can be satisfied that its tactic of unifying the arenas against Israel is working, albeit at low intensity,” Dr. Yoel Guzansky, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, told The Media Line.

“All the arenas are active, and Israel is preoccupied, surrounded by fire. The Iranian interest is to exhaust Israel,” Guzansky said.

Leading the way is Hezbollah, the Shi’ite political and military organization backed, financed, and trained by Iran that is the strongest armed force in Lebanon.

Iran’s proxies attack

One day after the war in Gaza began, Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel. It has since continued to do so, and the Israeli military continues to respond with airstrikes and artillery fire.

Several Israeli soldiers and civilians have been killed, and considerable property damage has been inflicted by the Hezbollah attacks. Meanwhile, over 100 Hezbollah terrorists are believed to have been killed by Israel in its responses.

Tens of thousands of people, the majority of people living in northern Israel, have been evacuated further south, and the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel is currently being contained by both parties. However, this could well escalate into a full-blown war.
For Iran, supporting Hezbollah has always been part of its regional strategy and aspirations. But with Hezbollah, and by extension Iran, being careful to avoid further escalation for now, Iran may be signaling that its desire lies elsewhere at the moment.
“By exhausting it, Iran wants to hurt Israel,” Guzansky said. “But ultimately, Iran wants to safeguard Hezbollah as its insurance policy.”

For years, Israel has been warning against the Iranian nuclear program. While Iran denies that the purpose of its nuclear program is military, Israel and many other countries believe otherwise.

Israeli officials have threatened on numerous occasions that should Iran progress significantly with its nuclear program, Israel would attack Iranian nuclear facilities. Such an attack would clearly plunge the region into a much wider conflict.

“Iran doesn’t want to wear out Hezbollah because it needs it in case Israel attacks its nuclear facilities,” Guzansky said. “What is happening now is convenient. Israel’s north is paralyzed, and Hezbollah’s losses are almost insignificant.”

During the current war, Iranian-backed militias have also launched drone strikes against US military bases in northern Iraq and eastern Syria, causing several casualties, and the United States has retaliated.

“First and foremost, Iran operates according to its own interests,” Maj. (ret.) Alex Grinberg, a former Israeli military intelligence officer and an expert on Iran at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, told The Media Line.
“Iran will continue sacrificing Hezbollah as long as it works for it, but if it wanted to escalate, it would have directed Hezbollah to use all of its firepower,” he said.

For Israel, the situation is not as convenient. The evacuation of the country’s northern and southern residents has paralyzed those areas, and the economy and agriculture have come to a standstill at a staggering toll.

Both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have repeatedly warned Hezbollah against escalating the situation.

“Israel says it cannot put up with the current situation, but it doesn’t have much choice, as the US is stopping it from escalating,” Guzansky said.

When the war began, US President Joe Biden was quick to warn other nations not to try to exploit the situation, although he did not name Iran or any other power.

“To anyone thinking of taking advantage of the situation, I have one word: Don’t,” Biden said several times.
The US has mobilized aircraft carriers to the region as a deterrent.

“Iran will always continue to be watching on the sidelines,” Grinberg said. “This is the basis of its doctrine, to not get directly involved in conflict. Only if Israel will attack its nuclear facilities will Iran respond directly.”

For now, Iran is watching closely to see how successful Israel will be in its stated aim of crushing Hamas. If Tehran perceives Hamas to be close to destruction, it might be motivated to ramp up the fire.

The last time Israel and Hezbollah fought a war was in 2006. Over 1,000 Lebanese, most of them believed to be civilians, were killed, and infrastructure in Lebanon was severely damaged. Over 160 Israelis, most of them soldiers, were killed.

Since then, Hezbollah is believed to have significantly upgraded its abilities. Israeli intelligence estimates that Hezbollah has accumulated around 150,000 unguided rockets in addition to a stockpile of precision-guided missiles, all with Iranian assistance.
Thus, a new war threatens to be much larger and much more lethal. Both sides are hesitant to initiate such an escalation, and heavy US involvement is attempting to avoid this.

As part of its web of proxies, Iran has backed the Yemen-based Houthi rebel militia, which has attacked Israeli and US targets in retaliation for Israel’s war on Hamas. The Houthis, who have officially declared war on Israel, have fired missiles and attack drones at the southern Israeli city of Eilat. The attacks were thwarted, but a larger threat remains.

“As a proxy that is part of the axis of resistance acting upon Iranian orders, the Houthi response was to be expected,” Grinberg said.

The Houthis’ most impactful weapon is their ability to disrupt commercial shipping through the Red Sea and up to the Suez Canal, the quickest and most cost-effective route for ships to travel from Asia to Europe, as it avoids having to sail around Africa.
“This is a strategic pathway,” Grinberg said. “This is a major threat to the freedom of sea passage that could create a global economic crisis.”

In response, the US announced a multi-national coalition aimed at protecting trade in the Red Sea.

“In its attempt to preserve Hezbollah’s firepower, Iran is employing the Houthis as part of its efforts against Israel,” said
Guzansky. “While the damage inflicted is so far limited, the Houthis are projecting a lot of power with not a lot of effort, and they are posing a serious challenge.”

Suspected members of Boko Haram terrorists on Saturday launched deadly attacks on Kwapre village in Hong Local Government Council of Adamawa State, killing 10 vigilantes.

Several members of vigilantes also sustained various degrees of injuries from gunshots.

An eye witness in Kwapre village, Hon. Hyella Anthony, a Kwapre indigene and former Councillor of Garaha Ward described the attack as “horror”, even as vigilantes were taken by surprise, confirming that 10 members of the vigilante group were killed on the spot, “2hile several wounded one have been evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre for treatment.”

The attack, which occurred around dusk, marks yet another brutal episode in a wave of violence that has plagued the region. Hon. Anthony, visibly shaken, verified the incident, stating, “It was a horrific scene.

According to him, the gunmen came in large numbers heavily armed, but were engaged by vigilantes who were trying to protect the village. “We lost 10 brave men, and others are fighting for their lives at FMC Hong.”

The District Head of Dugwaba, Mr. Simon Yakubu, expressed deep anguish over the recurring attacks, noting that this was the fifth assault on villages in the area within the past two weeks.

Where then do we run to, especially now that the rainy season has approached?

Lamenting the frequency and ferocity of the raids, he highlighted the sophistication of the attackers’ weaponry and their sheer numbers, which have left local defenses woefully outmatched. “Where then do we run to, especially now that the rainy season has approached?” Mr. Yakubu pleaded, his voice heavy with desperation. “The government must intervene. We cannot continue like this.”

The District Head painted a grim picture of the broader impact, revealing that more than 15 villages, home to over 6,000 people, have been deserted as residents flee the relentless violence. “These evil forces are driving us from our homes,” he cried. “Our villages are turning into ghost towns, and our people are scattered, living in fear.”

Our villages are turning into ghost towns, and our people are scattered, living in fear

The attack on Kwapre Village underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and its affiliates in northeastern Nigeria, despite years of military efforts to curb their insurgency. Local leaders and residents are now urgently calling for increased security presence and resources to protect vulnerable communities, particularly as the rainy season complicates displacement and access to aid.

As of this morning, Sunday, April 27, 2025, authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, and the exact condition of the injured vigilantes remains unclear. The people of Kwapre and surrounding villages wait anxiously for a response, hoping for protection against a menace that shows no signs of relenting.
