ALGON dissolves Kolade led Executives, swear in interim

The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has sworn in the Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the affairs of the Association for the next six months.

Alabi Akolade, CAPITAL POST learnt, was elected as the National President of ALGON in error. ALGON IMC claimed that Hon Kolade is not a Local Government Area (LGA) Chairman but Chairman, Local Council Development Authority (LCDA) created by the Lagos State govermment.

Speaking at the swearing in ceremony of the newly elected Excos in Abuja, The Local Government Chairmen explained that Hon Kolade is not their member and therefore have no constitutional right to lead the association. They said Shomolu/Bariga which he (Kolade) head is not among the 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria.

They cited section (5G) of the ALGON constitution which states that membership of the association shall comprise of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen and elected councilors of the 774 LGAs in Nigeria.

ALGON however stressed the need for the rule of the law to be obeyed in order to avoid all forms of ineligiblelity in the Association.

In his acceptance speech, The newly elected President of the Interim Management Committee who is also the Executive Chairman of Suleja Local Government Council, Niger State, Abdullahi Maji pledged that his team will stick to the constitution in the discharge or their duties.

He also assured his members of a smooth and transperent election for ALGON next executives.

He said “We will try as much as possible within the shortest possible time to see how we can form an elctoral commitee that will conduct election among the NEC members who feel to aspire for any position, from the president down to all the executives in the Association. The general assembly will be called to vote the leaders that will take the affairs of the association for the next two years when the duty of the IMC will elapse.

“IMC has about six months but we cannot wait until six months to do that” he noted.

The newly elected ALGON IMC are, National President, Abdullahi Maji (Niger State) Deputy National President, Sanda Sikiru(Oyo State), National Publicity Secretary, Ashombare Jide, (Kwara State), National Treasurer, Hon Princess Nkechinyere Iyioku, (Ebonyi State) among others.
