Akpabio reacts to ‘late plenary’ allegation, says he believes in essence of time, value of colleagues

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has denied media reports describing him as a habitual late comer during legislative sittings.
Reacting in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh on Sunday in Abuja, Akpabio said his critics needed to understand that he attends to urgent matters brought before him by his colleagues before proceeding to Chambers on each sitting days.
The statement read: “For sometime, a false narrative has been woven round the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, all in an attempt to give it a semblance of truth.
“Although, we had ignored the misinformation, it has become necessary to enlighten and educate the reading public so that these stories do not gain traction.
“First, as opposed to what has been bandied in the media that Akpabio is known for lateness to Plenary, being an intellectual politician and leader, he believes in Benjamin Franklin’s philosophy of “Time is money”. To him, “Time is of the essence”. And this is exemplified in his sterling achievements in private and public life. Without good time management skills, he could not have attained these feats.
“Secondly, Senator Akpabio as Senate President has absolute respect and regard for his distinguished colleagues and indeed all Nigerians. As the Senate President, he is not oblivious of the fact that he is just one among equals and has no cause whatsoever to undermine the elevated status of Distiguished Senators by always keeping them waiting in Plenary.
“However, we want the public to know that as Chairman of the National Assembly, Senator Akpabio and the his colleagues are very experienced and conversant with the legislative dynamics and are aware of the enormous legislative and administrative responsibilities of the office of the President of the Senate.
“Disruptions or lateness to any schedule of the heads of arms of government, particularly the National Assembly are usually priotised not compromised.
“As the Presiding Officer, Akpabio meets with the Principal Officers before every Plenary and emergency issues do spring up, which deserve urgent attention. Again, at every other plenary, there are always motions of urgent public/national importance from distinguished senators.
“By the provisions of the Standing Orders and Rules of the Senate, Senators with such motions are required to meet with the Presiding Officer before Plenary. Some of these issues are so urgent and cannot be kept in view and the President of the Senate is expected to attend to them expeditiously before commencement of Plenary. These circumstances most times creep into the commencement time.
“The lateness of the President of the Senate to the plenary at any insignificant number of times has never affected the industry of the Senate or deliberately intended to deconstruct the core mandate of the Senate President’s parliamentary core mandate.
“Any insinuation suggesting that Senator Akpabio is “habitually late” and it dates back to when he was Akwa Ibom State governor is but selling a rotten apple, which no discerning mind will buy.
“We can say without equivocation that Senator Godswill Akpabio’s penchant for beating the clock is never in doubt both in appointed and elected positions he has held.
“We, therefore, advise those spreading the gospel of Akpabio’s purported lateness to Plenary to apply brakes and allow the Uncommon Senate President concentrate on doing what he knows best- giving his all to the service of the nation and humanity.”

Falana dares Wike to report him to LPDC over judgment analysis on 27 Rivers Lawmakers defection

A foremost human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN Femi Falana who has faulted the Supreme Court judgment on Rivers State political case that restored the 27 State lawmakers to dared the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike to report him to the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee.
This was even as Falana was said to have analysed the judgment and faulted the apex Court over its decision on the political crisis.
Falana in a statement titled: “I did not lie against the Supreme Court of Nigeria”, insisted on his analysis and accused Wike of attempt to incite the apex Court against him.
The lawyer dismissed Wike’s threat as “spurious and tendentious in its material fact”, stressing that he did not misrepresent the Supreme Court’s decision on the defection of 27 Rivers State Assembly lawmakers loyal to Wike.
Falana in the statement released on Monday reacted to FCT Minister’s public criticism of him during a media conference in Abuja which was widely aired on Channels and other popular media outlets.12 April 2025

It was recalled that Wike claimed Femi Falana, a senior lawyer misrepresented the Supreme Court’s ruling and threatened to report him to the disciplinary arm of the body of lawyers in Nigeria.
Wike said, “If someone of Femi Falana’s calibre can go on national television and lie, it’s very serious. Lies can cause a lot of crises.”
Reacting further, Falana noted that Wike’s response to his analysis was scurrilous particularly for telling the public that he lied on the defection of the 27 Rivers State lawmakers.
Falana said, the issue on defection which is pending at the Federal High Court in Portharcourt before the Supreme Court made its ruling calls for concern.
Part of the statement read“I did not lie against the Supreme Court in respect of the judgment in question. All I said was that the matter of the defection of the 27 legislators was raised suo motu and determined by the eminent Justices of the apex court.”
Falana said he hinged his analysis on video evidence and sworn affidavit of the defection of 27 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, adding that his right to criticize the Supreme Court on its decision was provided in the Constitution and international human rights law.
“My fundamental right to criticise the decisions of courts is guaranteed by Section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights,” he said.
He accused Wike of hypocrisy, reminding of attacking Justices of Courts if the case wasn’t in his favour.
Falana added, “Unlike Mr. Wike, who calls judges names whenever they disagree with his politics of opportunism, I have always criticised the judgments of domestic and regional courts with utmost decorum and in good faith.
“Since he has become the unsolicited defender of the judiciary, I challenge him to report me to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee for professional misconduct,” Falana said.
