Academia, critical to addressing Cyber insecurity in Nigeria – NSA

The National Security Adviser (NSA) , Mohammed Babagana Monguno has stressed that the education sector is critical to addressing cyber insecurity in Nigeria.

This was revealed at the sensitisation workshop on the implementation of the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy 2021 for Academia and Education Sector on Wednesday in Abuja. adsbygoogle || []).push({}); js">

The cybersecurity policy and strategy document was launched by President Mummadu Buhari on the 23rd of February this year to promote the integrity of the cyberspace. The document highlight is a strategy of how Nigeria will address potential threats.

Some of the cyber threats are; Cyber crime, Cyber terrorism and terrorists’ use of the internet, Online child abuse and exploitation, Online gender exploitation, Elections interference, Pandemic induced cyber threats among others.

The NSA who noted that with the expansive nature of the internet, the proliferation and diversification of threats in the cyberspace has increased, urged the academia to assist in providing indigenous cybersecurity solutions to the country.

Chairman, Nigerian National Cybersecurity Review Committee, Abdulhakeem Ajijola emphasized the importance of cybersecurity to nation building. According to him, the Academia is the foundation to which cyber threats can be tackled.

He also said various components of the cyberspace require some level of capacity building which can only emanate from the education sector.

On the abuse of New Media, Ajijola said awareness and education is key.

Software Security Architect, Dr Uche Mbanaso, while re-echoing the need for indigenous technology stated that unless Nigeria reduces its dependency on foreign/imported technologies, the country will remain vulnerable.

In his remarks, the Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede decried the incessant cyber attacks in the nation’s education sector.

He said many educational institutions had not taken steps to curtail cyber attacks on their data probably because of a lack of awareness.

The JAMB boss however called for collaboration between security agencies and the education sector to fight cyber insecurities.

Participants at the workshop are drawn from different parts of the education sector including Vice chancellors of Universities, Administrators and Researchers.
