The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating floods that have ravaged several parts of Nigeria, resulting in the loss of lives and widespread destruction of property.

Severe flooding hit Maiduguri and parts of Bayelsa, Bauchi, and other regions following heavy rains on Sunday night, continuing into Monday and Tuesday morning.

In a statement issued by the caucus, signed by its leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda, the group expressed their distress over the situation.

According to Chinda, “Our hearts bleed over the flood disaster that engulfed some parts of the country and unquantifiable properties that were lost at this precarious time.

“Also, our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and livelihoods over the disaster”.

They called on the government at all levels to intensify their emergency response efforts and praised humanitarian organizations for their ongoing relief work in the affected areas.

In their words, “We call on the governments at all levels to double their emergency efforts and commended the efforts of humanitarian organizations working tirelessly to provide relief and assistance to the affected communities to cushion the effects so far.

“We’re equally using this opportunity to call on the Federal Government and various state governments across the federation to put proactive measures in place to checkmate future disasters of this magnitude rather than adopt the same old fire brigade measures after the act.”

The caucus further prayed for the souls of those who lost their lives and extended condolences to their families.
