Electoral Act Amendment Bill: PDP governors urge NASS to conclude on time

As lawmakers in the upper and lower legislative Chambers resume from new year recess on Tuesday, governors of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on them to conclude legislative activities on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill which was vetoed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The opposition governors made the call on Monday through a communique issued at the end of a two day meeting in Portharcourt, Rivers State capital.

They advised lawmakers in both Chambers to either override President Buhari or expunge the controversial clauses.

The governors in communique read by the Chairman, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, said that the meeting was to review the state of the nation for a better living.

The call is at the backdrop of the 2023 general election which they said time was no longer on the side of the nation given that the Electoral Act Amendment Bill was crucial to having a credible elections in 2023. push({});

The governors told the APC-led government to end killings and all form of insecurity in Nigeria, lamenting that President Muhammadu Buhari was not doing enough to end blood letting in parts of the country.

“We urge Mr. President to reconcile his position and consider decentralisation and restructuring of the security architecture as the most viable solution together with proper Army funding and training requirements for security agencies.

“The Nigerian economy has continued to deteriorate and Nigerians have become accustom to the bad economic news as exemplified by the inconsistency in the exchange rate, unsustainable unemployment rate, among others,” they stated.

The governors urged eligible Nigerians of all walks of life particularly the youths to register enmass with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to eneble them exercise their franchise in 2023 general election.

They congratulated Gov.Nyesom Wike of Rivers, for hosting the meeting and the leadership performance he had entrenched in the state.

The governors present were, those of Abia, Adamawa, Alkwa Ibom, Benue, Bayelsa, Taraba, Sokoto, Oyo, Edo, Enugu and Rivers State.
