LG election: Niger High Court Judge issues ultimatum, threatens to jail SIEC Chairman for contempt



Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik. of the Minna High Court No 3 has given the Chairman of the Niger State Independent Election Commission (NSIEC), Alhaji Aminu Baba 14 days to comply with the ruling of the Local Government Appeal Tribunal which gave judgement in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), candidate, Alh. Adamu Usman.

The Local Government election Chairmanship election was held on November 30th 2019 which has become a subject of litigation.

The PDP, Chairmanship Candidate contested the Local Government Election against Arch. Abdullahi Shuaibu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

As an incubent Chairman, he was declared winner by the State Independent Election Commission.

Disatisfied by the declaration, he challenged the victory of the APC candidate at the Local Government Election Tribunal in Minna.

Judgement was delivered in favour of Arch. Abdullahi Shuaibu also not satisfied with the Tribunal judgement, he went to the Appeal Court and was overturned.

Since the judgement of the Appellate Court delivered on the1st of June, 2020, the State Independent Election Commission (NSIEC), refused to comply with the Judgement to issue the Certificate of Return to Adamu Usman of the PDP.

Justice Halima Ibrahim has Since 30th May, 2020 served the State Independent Election Commission with the Court Order and was duly received by one Usman Idris.

The judge threatened that within the next 14 days, if the Certificate of Return was not issued to Adamu Usman the State Chairman of the NSIEC risked to be committed to prison for contempt of court.
